Nervous System Reset for Moms: A Meditation with Reiki

Do you ever feel like your body is buzzing with tension you can’t quite name?
Maybe it’s 3 pm and you’re already depleted. Maybe you snap at your kids over something small, and you immediately feel the guilt land in your chest. If any of this sounds familiar, what you actually need is a real nervous system reset for moms โ not another to-do list, just a few minutes to nurture yourself.
All that angst is not a personality flaw. That’s a nervous system that’s been running on overdrive for way too long, without a real chance to come back down. And unfortunately, it happens way too often for moms.
If this sounds familiar, I made something for you.
Why Moms Need a Nervous System Reset
When I first became a mom, I had trouble breastfeeding. My daughter never wanted to sleep, super curious about the world before her. I had no help, and every day felt like a trap for a new kind of personal failure.
Add to that a move across several states and a house remodel in a place I knew nothing about and no one.
To say that I was frazzled, tired, and constantly angry would be an understatement. Motherhood was kicking my ass, and I felt so alone.
Back then, I didnโt know that there was a word for it: nervous system dysregulation.

Meet Your Nervous System as a Mother
Your nervous system is your bodyโs command center. It includes your brain, spinal cord, and nerves, and works like a communication system for the different parts of your body. It helps regulate your bodyโs automatic functions like sweating and digestion.
Your nervous system also regulates your stress response, thoughts, and feelings. And when you are constantly under stress without the ability to relax, it can cause the overall system to shift.
You are more easily triggered into a fight-or-flight response, even if the source of your stress is your kid.
Here’s the thing nobody tells you about motherhood: your body doesn’t actually know the difference between “toddler meltdown in the grocery store” and “genuine emergency.”
To your nervous system, stress is stress. And when stress piles up, day after day, with no real off-ramp, your body just… stays on high alert. All the time.
That’s the state so many of us are walking around in without even realizing it. Not calm. Not panicked. Just stuck in a low hum of too much, all day long.

The State of Depletion: What Studies Show
If you feel like you’re the only one barely holding it together, here’s some (slightly validating, slightly alarming) news: you’re not.
A 2026 survey of over 4,000 moms โ the Motherhood Index, from Peanut and Nuna โ found that 93% of mothers report feeling burned out. Not stressed. Burned out. And 70% of us are running on fewer than five hours of unbroken sleep a night. (If you read that and thought, “that’s generous,” I see you.)
This is a collective nervous system that hasn’t had a real chance to come back down in months, maybe years. And it’s exactly why a reset like this one isn’t a luxury โ it’s maintenance.
Meditation as a Self-Care Tool for Moms
The good news? You don’t need hours of self-care you don’t have time for. You just need a way to tell your nervous system, “It’s safe now. You can stand down.”
My meditation practice has always been the lifeline for my motherhood journey. I donโt know that I could have done it any other way. [If you want to learn more about meditation’s healing potential, see How Does Meditation Work? A Simple Guide for Curious Moms.]
It doesnโt have to take a lot of time. But it does take the intention to do something for yourself.
That’s exactly what this practice is designed to do โ in 10 minutes, using your breath, your body, your voice, and a little bit of Reiki energy sent your way. Watch the full guided video here, then keep reading for a closer look at what each part of the practice is actually doing for your body and why.
Before we get into the breakdown, it helps to understand why each piece of this practice works the way it does โ because once you know what’s happening in your body, it’s a lot easier to trust the process instead of rushing through it.

What’s Inside This 10-Minute Nervous System Reset for Moms
This guided meditation moves through four distinct phases, each one building on the last. Here’s what’s actually happening in your body and energy field during each part.
1. Breathwork to Anchor You in the Present
We start with a slow, counted breath โ in through your nose for four counts, a hold, then out through your mouth for four counts.
This isn’t just “take a deep breath” fluff. Counted breathing like this (sometimes called box breathing) is one of the fastest ways to signal your nervous system to shift out of fight-or-flight and into what’s called your parasympathetic state โ basically, your body’s “rest and digest” mode.
Slowing your exhale specifically helps activate this shift, which is why we linger on that out-breath.
You don’t need to get the counting perfect. The goal is just to find your easy rhythm, and let your breath become the thing pulling you out of your racing thoughts and back into your body.

2. Releasing Tension, Piece by Piece
Next, we move slowly through your face and body, relaxing one small area at a time โ your forehead, your eyebrows, your jaw, all the way down through your neck and the top of your head.
Here’s why this matters more than it sounds like it should: so much of the tension we carry as moms lives in our bodies without us even noticing. Your jaw might be clenched right now. Your shoulders might be up by your ears. We hold stress physically, often in the exact same spots, day after day, without realizing we’re doing it.
By deliberately noticing and releasing each part, one by one, you’re not just relaxing your muscles โ you’re interrupting the stress pattern before it has a chance to settle even deeper into your body.
In addition, by placing your attention on your bodyโinstead of whatโs causing you stressโyou help ground your energy in your body as opposed to out there.
Your energy goes where your attention goes!
3. The Sound of “Ohm” and Your Vagus Nerve
You might be surprised by this part, but hear me out.
We say the sound “Ohm” out loud together, drawing it out into a long, vibrating tone. That vibration you feel in your chest and throat isn’t just for show. Toning and humming like this can help stimulate your vagus nerve, which plays a huge role in shifting your body out of stress mode and into calm.

It’s one of the more direct, physical ways to send your brain the signal that you’re safe.
Ohm also carries deep spiritual meaning across many traditions โ it’s often described as the sound of creation itself, connecting you to the energy of the Universe as you release what no longer serves you.
You might feel silly the first time you do this out loud. Do it anyway. (I promise, nobody’s watching. Except maybe your cat.) You might be surprised how much it can help you release.
4. Activating Your Heart Center
We finish by bringing your attention to the space behind your sternum, in the center of your chest, and gently placing the word “peace” there โ either as a word you repeat, or an image or symbol that feels meaningful to you.
This heart-centered awareness is where a lot of real emotional shift happens. When your attention moves out of your busy, looping mind and into your heart space, it becomes much easier to actually feel calm, instead of just thinking your way toward it.
If the feeling doesn’t come right away, that’s completely normal โ sometimes just holding the intention is enough, and the feeling can follow later.
Energetically, awareness on your heart allows you to activate your Heart Chakra. You can consider that as an open heart as opposed to a closed one. Which one do you think is more likely to connect to peace and joy?
5. A Short Reiki Session
Throughout the entire practice, I’m also sending you Reiki energy as extra support โ an invitation for whatever healing you’re open to receiving in that moment.
During this short session, I focus on cleansing your energy body (aura). Itโs all that dirty, congested energy from stress that needs to go. I then send you Reiki for balancing and strengthening, allowing your system to reboot.

How to Get the Most Out of This Practice
A few tips before you press play:
- Find a quiet 10 minutes, even if that means locking the bathroom door (we’ve all been there).
- Don’t worry about doing it “right.” There’s no perfect way to breathe or tone or relax โ just showing up for yourself already counts. If you donโt feel like you have the energy to follow along, simply have it in the background as you relax.
- You can call on your own guides or beliefs during the invocation portion, in whatever way feels true for you. This practice is meant to meet you where you are, spiritually.
- This is a support, not a replacement for any care you’re already receiving. If you’re navigating anxiety, burnout, or an ongoing health condition, please keep working with your doctor or therapist alongside practices like this one.
Final Thoughts
You don’t have to earn rest. You don’t have to wait until everything is handled before you’re allowed to feel calm.
Ten minutes, one breath at a time, is enough to remind your nervous system that it’s safe to stand down โ even if just for today.
I hope you try this nervous system reset meditation for moms. If this practice brought you even a little more peace, I’d love to hear about it. Thank you so much for reading, and Mother Light Sanctuary is here to support you!
