Reiki vs Pranic Healing: What’s the Real Difference? (A Reiki Master & Pranic Healer Explains)
If you’re here, I’m guessing you’ve heard the terms Reiki and Pranic Healing floating around in your energy-healing rabbit hole (was it YouTube?), and you’re wondering: is this the same thing with two different names? Or are these actually different?
I get this question ALL the time, and honestly? It took me a while to fully understand the difference myself. So if you’ve felt a little confused trying to sort out Reiki vs Pranic healing, you are not alone, and you are in the right place.
By the end of this post, you’ll know the three biggest, most practical differences between Reiki and Pranic Healing, so you can engage with either modality (or both, like I do) with actual clarity about what you’re getting into. And trust me, they are very different.

My Story: How I Ended Up Practicing Both
Here’s something that might surprise you: if you had talked to me six or seven years ago, I would NOT have told you I had any interest in becoming an energy healer. It genuinely wasn’t on my radar.
What I did have, though, was a meditation practice. I’ve been meditating consistently for over 20 years at this point — long before “energy healing” was ever part of my vocabulary. And almost 10 years ago, that meditation practice led me to a retreat hosted by Dr. Joe Dispenza, which included coherence healing. It was genuinely one of the most mind-blowing experiences I’ve ever had. Something in me shifted there.
To make a long story a little shorter: that retreat planted a seed. And around the same time, my baby son started showing signs of health issues that I couldn’t fully explain or resolve through conventional means alone. Between the retreat experience and watching my son struggle, I felt pulled to go deeper into energy work.
The most accessible modality where I lived at the time was Reiki, so that’s where I started. I trained all the way up through Reiki Master and second-level Karuna Reiki. For a while, that was enough.
I wasn’t actively using Reiki or anything else to help my son back then. I left it up to the doctors to handle that.
Then my son’s health issues got worse — not better — and I turned more deeply into energy healing and using it in my life. My son’s health improved, but I found myself wanting something more targeted, more precise. That’s when I started training in Pranic Healing.
So to give you the actual numbers: I’ve now been practicing Reiki for 5 years, and Pranic Healing for 2 years. Both are woven into how I support my family and how I show up in this work, which is exactly why I get asked “wait, aren’t those the same thing?” so often — and why I wanted to write this out clearly, once and for all.
Before I break down the three practical differences, let’s back up and actually define what each of these modalities is, because you can’t understand the differences until you understand the two things you’re comparing.
Reiki vs Pranic Healing
What Is Reiki?
Reiki has been around longer, so there’s a good chance you’ve at least heard the word before, even if you couldn’t define it. Reiki is a Japanese term that translates to “life force energy.” As a modality, it uses that life force energy to help the body and nervous system relax — which, in turn, supports healing.
If you want the simplest possible definition: Reiki is a Japanese technique for relaxation that aids in healing.

A few things that are true of Reiki:
- It uses specific Reiki frequencies — powerful but gentle white light that are said to have their own consciousness — that are passed down from teacher to student through attunements.
- It works with the body’s major energy centers, or chakras.
- It can be done with touch or without touch (hands-on or hands-off). Specific Reiki hand positions prescribe where to connect.
- It’s relatively easy to access, since Reiki practitioners and classes are fairly widespread in the Western world.
- It is deeply relaxing, and has been known to support healing of both physical and emotional issues.
So, what are its benefits?
For me personally, Reiki calmed my nervous system in a way I didn’t know I needed. It helped me make peace with the absolutely chaotic, relentless demands of motherhood — I’m talking about the kind of low-grade resentment that builds up when you’re touched-out and sleep-deprived and just… done. Reiki helped dissolve that. Not erase the demands of motherhood (nothing does that, sorry), but it helped me hold them differently.

One honest caveat here: every Reiki teacher and every Reiki experience is different, so what I’m describing is my experience, not a universal guarantee.

What Is Pranic Healing?
Pranic Healing might be brand new to you, or you might have heard the term in passing. Either way, here’s the foundation: Pranic Healing is newer than Reiki. It was developed in the 1980s by a scientist, businessman, and spiritualist named Choa Kok Sui in the Philippines.

“Prana” also translates to “life force” or “vital energy,” but in Sanskrit rather than Japanese. (So right there, you can already see why people conflate the two — they’re both rooted in the concept of working with life force energy.)
Like Reiki, Pranic Healing also works with the chakras and the body’s broader energy systems. But unlike Reiki, Pranic Healing is no-touch only. There’s no hands-on option, and you are more likely to find a remote session rather than in-person, especially in the United States.
For me, Pranic Healing has been the modality I use to support my son most precisely. For myself, I’ve used it for things like stomach aches and shoulder pain — specific, localized issues where I want to apply something targeted rather than general.

Okay. Now that you know what each one actually is, let’s get into the part you really came here for.
Reiki vs Pranic Healing: The 3 Practical Differences
1. Different Healing Frequencies
Reiki uses powerful but gentle, self-aware frequencies. Different Reiki symbols correspond to different frequencies of Divine white light, which practitioners describe as coming from the heavens. Each of Reiki’s frequencies is transmitted from teacher to student through the Reiki symbols. Each symbol transmits a different set of characteristics.
Pranic Healing, on the other hand, works with a much wider spectrum—color prana, divine light frequencies, and the very potent electric violet light. So where Reiki works primarily with very high frequencies of Divine white light, Pranic Healing draws from a broader palette.

2. Application: General vs Specific
This, to me, is one of the most useful distinctions to actually understand.
Reiki tends to be more general. As the practitioner, I’m channeling the energy, but the energy itself does most of the work — I’m more of a conduit than a technician. My main job is to get out of the way and be a clear channel for the energies to do their job.
Pranic Healing is different. The emphasis in Pranic Healing is on cleaning away “dirty” or stagnant energy first, and then refilling with fresh energy. The practitioner uses specific protocols for specific ailments, and those protocols involve multi-layered steps that you follow in sequence.
There are dedicated Pranic Healing protocols for things like cancer support, headaches, post-surgery recovery, insect bites, and even psychotherapy support. It’s not one-size-fits-all energy work — it’s closer to a treatment plan.
So the short version: Reiki is general relaxation and healing. Pranic Healing is specific-ailment healing.

3. The Session Experience Itself
Because Reiki is more general, it lends itself to single-session treatments. And because there are so many Reiki practitioners out there at this point, you will likely be able to find a local practitioner to give you a hands-on session. (Once again, Reiki is practiced remotely, too; this is how I learned it and still practice.)
Pranic Healing protocols, because they’re addressing something specific, are usually multi-session. Receiving Pranic Healing is very relaxing, and you will likely see an improvement in the first session. But the protocols call for repeated treatments for best results, and for the healing of an ailment to stick.
The more severe the issue, the more frequent the sessions will be. Because of that structure, and because Pranic Healing is only non-touch, it is more commonly done at a distance rather than in person.
Why I Use Both (And Why You Might Too)
Right now, I’m doing more Pranic Healing, mostly because of where my son is at in his health journey, and because I’m still deep in the learning process with this modality. But I haven’t left Reiki behind — not even close.
I genuinely love both modalities, and honestly, I think of it as having more friends and allies in my corner rather than having to pick a favorite. It’s not about which one is “best” or “better”; it’s more about what aligns with you at this time.

Nonetheless, here’s how I think about choosing between the two:
- If you want general relaxation and want to try energy work, either to receive a session or to learn with the least friction, Reiki is the natural entry point.
- If you have a specific condition you want to work on — for yourself or for a family member — Pranic Healing is the better fit.
So if you’re a tired, overwhelmed mom without a specific health issue, and you just want to feel more relaxed and regulated, start with Reiki. But if you (or someone in your family) has a specific issue you want to work on, Pranic Healing may serve you better.
And if you want to actually experience the Pranic Healing side of things instead of just reading about it, I have a chakra cleansing sleep meditation using Pranic Healing principles — it’s a gentle way to feel the difference for yourself, especially if bedtime is when your body finally lets its guard down (and also when your brain decides to replay every conversation from the day, no? just me?).
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, the Reiki vs Pranic Healing question isn’t really about picking a “winner.” They’re two very different tools, built for two different jobs, both rooted in the same core idea: that we are made of life force energy, and that energy can be worked with intentionally to support healing.
Reiki gave me back my nervous system. Pranic Healing gave me a way to show up for my son with more precision. I don’t think I’d want to have only learned one or the other — and if you’re standing at the beginning of your own energy-healing journey, you don’t have to choose just one either.
If this is the first time you’ve really understood the difference between Reiki and Pranic healing, I’m so glad this helped clear it up. And if you’re ready to actually feel what Pranic Healing is like, that chakra cleansing sleep meditation is a gentle place to start.
A note: Reiki and Pranic Healing are energy practices that may support relaxation and overall wellbeing. They are not a substitute for medical care, and any health concerns should be discussed with a qualified healthcare provider.
